“Reach for the Stars” by musician will.i.am after it was transmitted from the surface of Mars by the Curiosity rover.
Will.i.am sings ‘Reach for the Stars’ at JPL
As you can imagine, this was the first time that a song was beamed back to us from Mars. Will.i.am, the front man of the Black-Eyed Peas wrote an orchestral tune for this special moment. A children’s choir sings parts of the song.
Last year NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden called will.i.am and asked him if he wanted to do something for young students. NASA believed that a performance by one of their popstars would attract young students to science, technology, engineering and mathematics classes.
Bolden asked will.i.am to put a song on Curiosity that would be beamed back to Earth after she had landed.
“Why they say the sky is the limit
When I’ve seen the footprints on the moon
Why do they say the sky is the limit
When I’ve seen the footprints on the moon
And I know the sky might be high
But baby it ain’t really that high
And I know that Mars might be far
But baby it ain’t really that far
Let’s reach for the stars”
