Patrick R. Chai

NASA | ESDMD Strategy & Architecture Office, Deputy Lead for the Mars Architecture Team

Dr. Patrick R. Chai is an Aerospace Engineer at NASA’s Langley Research Center in the Space Mission Analysis Branch in the System Analysis & Concepts Directorate, located in Hampton, Virginia. He is the Deputy Lead for the Mars Architecture Team in the Strategy and Architecture Office for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, leading an interagency & interdisciplinary team to chart the course of Human Mars exploration architecture.

He began his career at NASA as a graduate student researcher with the National Institute of Aerospace, working on development of mission concepts for beyond Earth exploration. After receiving his degree, he began at NASA as an interplanetary trajectory analyst as part of the agency's Evolvable Mars Campaign and part of the Mars Integration Group. This work eventually led him to become the lead for the in-space transportation architecture within the Mars Architecture team.

He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, where he was a member of the Space Systems Design Laboratory.
