Nathan Smith

Dr Nathan Smith is a Research Fellow at the University of Manchester in the UK. Nathan’s research focuses on humans in extreme environments. He is particularly interested in the various factors that contribute to both surviving and thriving in stressful and high-risk settings. Currently, Nathan is a PI/Co-I on a number of projects related to resilience and high performance. This includes research with both the European Space Agency and NASA and the UK Ministry of Defence. Prior to his current academic position, Nathan was a senior human factors scientist at the MOD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. Recently, Nathan led the SupportTheWorkers (www.supporttheworkers.org) collective, which translated research on humans in extreme environments to support healthcare workers responding to covid-19. At Manchester, Nathan is module leader of a degree course entitled ‘From Antarctica to Outer Space: Surviving and Thriving in Extremes’. He is currently writing a commissioned book on humans, extremes and the future for MIT Press.
